Don’t Wait for Empty: Why Therapy Should Start Sooner

When do you fill your tank? Do you top it up before it hits halfway, or wait until the gas
light comes on?
No matter your approach, one thing is certain: you can’t run a car on empty. At some
point, before you hit zero, you have to stop and refuel.
So why do we often wait until we are at “empty” before seeking mental health care?
You may have heard the phrase, “you can’t pour from an empty cup.” The same idea
applies here. While our healthcare system has increasingly shifted toward preventative
care, encouraging annual checkups and early screenings, we have not fully embraced
this mindset when it comes to mental health.
Seeking support before reaching a crisis point has real advantages. When you’re not in
immediate distress, you’re better able to reflect, process, and engage in meaningful
change. You can build coping strategies that support you across different areas of your
life, from work to relationships to daily self-care.
It also gives you space to explore therapists and find one that truly fits. Many people
write off therapy after a poor first experience because they sought help when their tank
was already at zero and had limited options. Finding a therapist is a bit like finding a
good mechanic – you want someone reliable before something breaks down. It’s far
easier to maintain a system than to repair it under pressure.
Taking care of your mental health shouldn’t start at empty. The goal is to keep your tank
from getting there in the first place.
At Mind+Zen, we are piloting a drop-in counselling program where you can register and
book a same-day appointment with one of our student interns from the MSW or
Counselling Psychology programs. Our interns will offer 50-minute sessions of brief
supportive counselling, including resource navigation and parenting skills. This is a
great opportunity to refill your tank and give therapy a try while you wait for your
appointment at Nixon Medical Center.
